Born and raised in Utah, Austin developed a love for music at a young age and was awarded the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award upon graduating high school. He holds a Bachelor of Music in Saxophone Performance from the University of Utah (2000) and a Master of Music in Jazz Studies from the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music (2004).
From 2004 to 2008, Austin was the Assistant Musical Director at Earlham College, in Richmond, IN, where he directed the Earlham College Jazz Band, assisted with the Earlham Orchestra, and taught private lessons on saxophone and in jazz theory. Currently, Austin is an Adjunct Professor of Music for the Music Industry & Recording Arts program (MIRA) at St. Petersburg College. He teaches classes in music theory, improvisation, performance techniques, and music appreciation. In addition to his teaching position, Austin keeps a busy performing schedule and plays throughout the St. Pete / Tampa Bay area with his own groups and as a side man.
